Springtime brings warmer weather and more outdoor interaction…as well as the oft-dreaded “spring cleaning”. However, carpets and storage spaces aren’t the only areas in need of a quick brush-up.
As you break out the brooms and clear out the dust and cobwebs, remember to give your home’s plumbing a “spring tune-up” as well. A little inspection and prevention can help you not only keep your home in tip-top shape, but also save some dough. Here are four items to add to your spring “to-do” list.
Check Your Sump Pump – Your sump pump could mean the difference between a dry spring and unexpected leaks and flooding. Make sure to test it by pouring a few buckets of water into the sump pit. It should kick on in a few seconds and turn off automatically.
Check Your Hose Bib – Frozen pipes can expand, leading to leaks and cracking. This is most common when hoses are left hooked up to the home throughout the winter months. It is good practice to test and inspect the area prior to heavy use to avoid potential water damage.
Leak Inspection – While de-winterizing your home, take a moment to check faucets, bathtubs and toilet connections for leaks. Early prevention can save money on water and repairs.
Clog Prevention – Spring cleaning is the perfect time to implement some thrifty clog prevention measures, as well. Cleaning mineral deposits with vinegar can clear up pressure issues and avoid drain clumping. Using a drain strainer to catch shedding winter coats can also help.
A little extra prevention can go a long way to helping protect your home from water damage, weather and even a call to your local plumber.
