Living in the dry climate of Nevada we all learn to deal with the summer heat. Some like the hot weather some don’t, but one thing is for sure; we all choose to live in it.
As you may or may not know AC systems in the desert were not really used until the 60’s and 70’s they were not standard in most homes until the mid to late 70’s.
With that said the invention of the residential Air Conditioning unit has been a wonderful addition to the modern home. Whether your unit is on the roof or a Split type AC system, we all need our Air Conditioning.
The one thing every AC unit does need more than anything is Maintenance! This is the crucial item that all AC units need in our Hot,Dry, and part of the year Humid Climate. Regular service maintenance of your AC system helps it continue to work properly and efficiently.
The older an AC unit gets the harder it has to work to keep your home cool enough. The longer a unit runs can translate to a higher power bill.
Regular maintenance performed either before the season of Summer starts or during the high temperatures of Summer time, is what needs to happen.
In a multi point check of an AC system, from the pressure of the refrigerant in the system, to the amp draw on the Condenser Fan Motor or the Compressor tells a Technician if the system is working properly within the manufacturers requirements.
These readings allow the technician to determine if the system could potentially have a failure at some point in the future. No technician can tell the future of when a system will fail, but the signs are there for them to interpret and notify you of these possible future issues.
The average lifespan of an AC condenser unit in the hot desert temperatures is an average of 12-14 years, that doesn’t mean that they can last longer than that time frame, with proper care and regular maintenance.
Some units last for many years, however the efficiency of that unit after so many years does go down. After about ten years the SEER(Seasonal Efficiency Energy Rating) rating will drop. When the cost of repair Vs the cost of replacement of a Condenser unit comes up it is wise for you to consider replacing a unit.
Replacement of a Condenser unit is an expense that should be taken into account. Does this mean you should go with the most expensive replacement option? No, is the simple answer, you should however choose your options of replacement very carefully.
A great AC Service Tech should present you with all types of options for replacing a Condenser unit. If saving money over a longer period of time then replacement with higher efficiency might be the best option.
If you want the best option for replacement is to go with the middle route then you will get great efficiency and not spend more than your budget would allow.
All of your options should be weighed out, and having your AC service tech provide you with several options, with repair vs replacement can help you make that informed decision which can keep you cool in the hottest part of the summer season.
